Piecing it together

“I wanted to have the piece see through the eyes of a teenager, noticing the signs and realising that their friend is in trouble.”

This short piece was an entry into the 2025 PADC Student Skull Awards, and I was lucky enough to be a finalist for the Visual Narrative Category.

High schoolers are likely to drop out of school within 3-8 months of becoming homeless, which puts them at risk becoming more “undesirable” by employers, rental agencies, and tertiary education facilities. This makes it harder, if not impossible, to pull themselves out of the situation they have found themselves in, usually by no fault of their own.

Often the only constant people in many of these high schooler’s lives is their friends. Teenagers spend on average 30-40 hours per week with their friends, and that’s just within school hours. Teenagers are acutely tuned in to their friends, especially regarding mental health and personal well-being. A friend is more likely to not only notice that their friend is having a hard time, but also to act on their concerns.
