night parrot book cover
For this live brief with Night Parrot, we were asked to create two book covers that thematically link together or have overlapping motifs.
Both of the pieces use surreal collage to subtly communicate about violence towards women that takes place in both stories. I represented that through using flowers in the place of the character’s heads.
For “Old Ghosts” the flower I used was an oleander. This flower is poisonous unless treated correctly, then the flower can be a natural medicine. For the story, this serves as a allegory for how the main character is poorly treated by the men in the book, and ends up being part of their demise.
For “Bloodwood” I used the West Australian banksia, which regenerates through exposure to fire. For the story, this is represents how women persist, even through extreme acts of violence.
